Beyond fabric, the structural design matters enormously. Combat plate carriers used by military personnel need to accommodate SAPI or ESAPI plates, which are the standard-issue ceramic or polyethylene plates used across branches of the US military and allied forces. A carrier that doesn’t properly support full plate coverage — front, back, and side — is cutting corners that could cost lives. Side plate pockets, while sometimes overlooked, dramatically increase ballistic protection against flanking threats. When evaluating army body armor, always verify that the cummerbund system allows for side plate integration.
